It' been a long winter in North Dakota, but spring is finally upon us. The snow is finally gone — well, most of it anyway — and that means it's time to start thinking about gardening.

If you live in an apartment or on property with very little land, you might think gardening is not the hobby for you. However, we took the the time to talk with Kevin from Plant Perfect and he assures us that is simply not the case! He gave us a run down of his favorite indoor plants and shared some tips that we'd like to share with you.

Foliage vs. Succulents

The two types of plants Kevin recommend beginners try are foliage and succulents. Which one is best for you will likely depend on your personal style preference, but both groups of plant life are ideal for those just starting out because they are both low maintenance. So what are they difference?

The word foliage is simply defined as a collection of leaves, so you can easily figure out how these types of plants got their name. If you want to add some bright green to your house, foliage plants are the perfect types of plants for you.

Foliage

Some of the easier to care for types of foliage Kevin recommended include: Pothos, philodendron, Schefflera arboricola, Fiddle-leaf fig, and rubber plants. These types of plants enjoy light, but you can get away with raising them in lower light than other types of plants. Kevin also

Succulents are on the opposite end of the spectrum. While foliage is perfect for lovers of green and leaves, succulents have a more reserved look, though they come in a wider variety of colors.

What are succulents exactly? Succulents are plants that retain water in leaves, stems, or other structures. Due to this they need to be watered less frequently than other plants. These types of plant need more sunlight however, so they are perfect plants for window sills.

If this description sounds like cacti, you're almost right. It's important to note that while all cacti are succulents, not all succulents are cacti.

Kevin talks about them in the video below.

If these plants have intrigued you, be sure to come out to the Garden Expo on April 5 and 6. Kevin and Plant Perfect will be there to answer all your gardening questions.
